Winterfest Lights in Pigeon Forge

Pigeon Forge’s Winterfest runs from Nov. 6, 2026 through Jan. 31, 2027, so the lights are up every night of December (official Winterfest page). The city puts up more than 6 million lights, and the two best ways to see them are free.

  • Wonders of Light Walking Trail: a free path along the Riverwalk with more than 45 nature-themed displays. Leashed pets are welcome and the path is wheelchair-friendly.
  • Winterfest Driving Tour of Lights: drive the Parkway after dark to see the wildlife scenes and giant ornaments. The Great Smoky Mountain Wheel at The Island glows in holiday colors all season.

The Winterfest Christmas Village closes after Nov. 28, so the artisan market is a November-only stop this year. In December, the Gatlinburg craft show below fills that gap. Our Winterfest guide has more ideas.

Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas

Dollywood‘s Smoky Mountain Christmas runs through Jan. 3, 2027 (Dollywood), and December is the heart of it. The park is lit with more than 6 million lights, and each area has its own color scheme, from the red and green of Santa’s Village to the blues and whites of Glacier Ridge. New this year, Country Fair becomes Peppermint Valley, and Wildwood Grove hosts Snow in the Grove, a nightly show of light, music and snow built around The Wildwood Tree.

The stage lineup brings back Christmas in the Smokies and ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas indoors, plus Appalachian Christmas and O Holy Night outside. Park hours and ticket prices change by date, and the park doesn’t open every day around the holidays, so check Dollywood’s operating calendar for the exact day you want to go. A weekday in the first half of the month is usually the calmest time to visit.

Gatlinburg’s Winter Magic and the Trolley

Gatlinburg’s Winter Magic puts millions of lights on displays all over town, and it has been a local tradition for more than 30 years (Visit Gatlinburg). You can drive through or walk the Parkway. The free Visit Gatlinburg app has a self-guided lights tour and a scavenger hunt for the life-size snowpeople set up around downtown.

Downtown parking gets tight in December, and the free Gatlinburg Trolley is the easy way around it. The trolleys switched to their winter schedule on Nov. 1, and you can leave the car at the Park-n-Ride lot at the Gatlinburg Welcome Center on Banner Road (Gatlinburg Trolley). In November and December the Yellow Route runs Monday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. out to the Arts & Crafts Community.

In past years the trolley has also run a narrated Ride of Lights tour on holiday evenings. As of mid-October the 2026 schedule and fare haven’t been posted, so check with Visit Gatlinburg before you build a night around it.

Fantasy of Lights Christmas Parade (Dec. 4)

Gatlinburg’s Christmas parade steps off Friday, Dec. 4, 2026 at 7:30 p.m. (Visit Gatlinburg). Floats, giant balloons, marching bands and Santa start at Baskins Creek Bypass, head to Traffic Light #3, then turn south on the Parkway and finish at Traffic Light #10. Watching from the sidewalk is free. Grandstand seats near Traffic Light #3 and the Gatlinburg Convention Center are $50 per person and include a Santa hat. Seating opens at 5:30 p.m.

The city starts narrowing East Parkway for float staging at 4:30 p.m., and all traffic on the route stops around 7 p.m. Get downtown early or take the trolley in, and plan dinner before the crowds line up.

Great Smoky Christmas Arts & Crafts Show (Nov. 30 to Dec. 6)

Members of the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community bring their handmade work to the Gatlinburg Convention Center for this annual show (show details). Expect quilts, pottery, woven baskets, brooms and jewelry, much of it made in the shops on Glades Road. Admission is free. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Christmas Shows and Dinner Theaters

By December most Pigeon Forge theaters are running their holiday versions. These have 2026 Christmas dates posted on their own sites:

Biblical Times Dinner Theater and other venues have staged Christmas programs in past years, so check each theater’s website for this year’s lineup. Christmas week and Saturday nights sell out first. Our Pigeon Forge attractions page lists the rest of the shows in town.

New Year’s Eve in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg

The Island in Pigeon Forge

The Island is throwing two countdowns on Thursday, Dec. 31 (The Island). A new Noon Year’s Eve party for families with young kids starts at 11 a.m. with a free concert by Sol Driven Train and a countdown at noon. That night Sol Driven Train plays again at 8:30 p.m., and American Idol winner Hannah Harper takes the stage at about 10:30 p.m. for a set that runs up to the midnight fireworks. The fireworks soundtrack airs live on WIVK 107.7 FM. Parking and general admission are free, and VIP stage-front tickets are sold separately.

Gatlinburg’s Ball Drop

Gatlinburg’s free New Year’s Eve Celebration and Ball Drop happens at the base of the Gatlinburg Space Needle (Visit Gatlinburg). Live music and an illuminated drone show lead up to midnight, when a 15-foot LED ball drops and fireworks go off. The 2026 performers and road closure times weren’t posted as of mid-October. Our parking guides for Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge on New Year’s Eve will help you plan where to leave the car.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park in December

With the leaves down, the views from the overlooks open up and the trails are quiet. A few things to know first, from the National Park Service:

  • Open roads: Newfound Gap Road (US 441) and Cades Cove Loop Road stay open year-round, along with Little River Road, weather permitting (NPS seasonal roads).
  • Closed for the season: Kuwohi Road (formerly Clingmans Dome Road) and the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail close after Nov. 29, so neither is open in December. Kuwohi Road reopens April 1 and Roaring Fork on April 17.
  • Parking tags: any vehicle parked in the park for more than 15 minutes needs one. Tags are $5 a day, $15 a week or $40 a year (NPS fees and passes).
  • Snow and ice: Newfound Gap Road can close for a few hours or a few days after winter weather. Check current road conditions the morning you go.

The park has traditionally marked the holidays with a Festival of Christmas Past at Sugarlands Visitor Center in mid-December, built around Appalachian holiday traditions. The 2026 date hasn’t been announced yet, so watch the park’s ranger-led events page. Our Smokies winter tips cover more about visiting the park this time of year.

Practical Tips for a December Visit

Weather and What to Pack

The National Park Service lists an average December high of 52 degrees in Gatlinburg and an average low of 28 (NPS weather). It can be 10 to 20 degrees colder up high, and a sunny afternoon in town can mean snow on the ridges. Bring a warm coat and gloves for the parade and the walking trail, and shoes that can handle wet pavement.

Crowds and Timing

The first two weeks of December are the easier stretch, with the lights and shows in full swing and fewer people than later in the month. Crowds build the week before Christmas and stay heavy through New Year’s Day. Weeknights are calmer for the light displays, and the Parkway clears out later in the evening.

Christmas and New Year’s Week

Book lodging and show tickets early for the last two weeks of the month. Some restaurants and attractions close or shorten their hours on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, so call ahead, and Visit Gatlinburg keeps a list of businesses open for Christmas on its winter page. On New Year’s Eve, plan to be parked by early evening if you’re heading to either celebration.
