About Tennessee Museum of Aviation

The Tennessee Museum of Aviation is at 135 Air Museum Way in Sevierville, on the Gatlinburg Pigeon Forge Airport. Airworthy warbirds are the core of the collection, and because the museum sits on a working airport, vintage planes are sometimes seen making unscheduled flight demonstrations. It is also Tennessee’s official repository and archive of aviation history.

The hangar

The 35,000-square-foot hangar holds the aircraft along with engines, cockpits and military vehicles. The museum’s aircraft list includes two Republic P-47D Thunderbolts, Wicked Wabbit and Hun Hunter XVI, a P-51D Mustang, the A-1 Skyraider Lieutenant America, an OV-10 Bronco, an HU-16E Albatross amphibian, MiG-17 and MiG-21 jets, a Sikorsky UH-34G helicopter and a 1902 Wright Glider. The hangar is heated in winter and the exhibit gallery is air-conditioned, so it works in any weather.

The Exhibit Gallery

The Exhibit Gallery covers aviation and military history with uniforms, aircraft models and hundreds of pieces of memorabilia. A 52-foot Wave Wall traces aviation from before the Wright Brothers, with timelines of military aviation and Tennessee’s part in it. The Faith and Courage exhibit honors U.S. military chaplains from World War II to the present. Plan on at least an hour to an hour and a half, longer if you like to read every placard.

Admission

The museum lists admission at $18 for adults, $15 for seniors 60 and up, $12 for kids 6 to 12 and $13 for current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces with ID. Kids under 6 get in free, Sevier County residents get a special rate with photo ID, and there’s no sales tax on admission. Prices can change, so check the museum’s hours and admission page for the latest.

Groups of 25 or more can book discounted tours with 14 days’ notice for a self-guided visit or 21 days for a guided one. Saturday groups are self-guided only.

Closures

Along with Sundays and Mondays, the museum closes on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day and shuts at 3 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Winter weather can close it too, so call (865) 908-0171 before you drive out in the winter.

Getting there

The museum is about 2 miles from downtown Sevierville, north on U.S. 411 toward Newport. From Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg, take U.S. 441 to Sevierville, stay in the right lane and turn right onto U.S. 411 North. Go about 1 3/4 miles and turn right onto Air Museum Way at the Parkway Church.

Nearby

It makes a good break from the Parkway crowds. For more stops in the area, see our Pigeon Forge attractions page or the combined attractions guide.
